ATV Trail Riding Tips
Trail riding with your ATV allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature as well as the thrill of an adrenaline rush. If you are new to the four-wheeler lifestyle, check out the following tips for making the most of your trail ride. If you want more advice or want to explore quads for sale, head over to Power Sports Abrams. Our dealership is located in Abrams, Wisconsin. We also proudly serve those in Green Bay and Appleton, Wisconsin.
1. Wear the Right Gear
Safe ATV riding involves wearing certain attire to keep you safe from the weather and safe in the event of a crash. You'll want a well-fitting helmet, goggles or some other form of eye protection, sturdy boots, and durable and full-length outerwear. If there is a chance of rain, you will want to opt for waterproof outerwear.
2. Bring the Right Tools
Your quad should be equipped with some basic safety equipment. Situations can come up when you ride a powerful vehicle into unpredictable wilderness areas. Make sure your four-wheeler has a knife, a first aid kit, fire starter, flashlight, rain poncho, snacks, water, an extra gas can, a compass, a GPS, a map, a flat tire patch kit, and a wrench that fits your ATV's bolt size.
3. Do a Pre-Ride Inspection
Even the highest quality 4-wheelers are going to suffer from performance or mechanical issues. It's better to catch these problems early and in the convenience of your driveway rather than in the middle of the woods. A pre-ride inspection involves looking over your quad for any potential issues so you can get them fixed before your next ride.
Start with your tires. Are they inflated to the right air pressure, according to the manufacturer's recommendations? Do they have enough tread? Next, check that all the control connections and cables are working well. Then, look over the chain for any links that are worn down. Next, check your fluid levels and top off anything that is low.
4. Check the Weather
Before you head out on a trail ride, you will want to consult the weather forecast. If you see any storms, heavy rains, lightening, or very high temperatures, you will want to stay home. Extreme weather makes it harder to stay safe on the trail. Plus, it makes your ride much less enjoyable.
5. Stick to the Trail
When you hit the trail on your ATV, do your best to stay on the trail. The path is created for a reason! If you take your quad anywhere you like, you will cause damage to the plants growing in the area. You can also end up encountering hazards, such as hidden potholes or steep dips, that could harm you and/or your ATV. Stay on the trail and stay safe.
6. Share the Trail
Odds are, you won't be the only rider on the trail. When you encounter oncoming traffic, follow the proper right of way. If you are riding in a group, you will want to let those you pass know how many people are coming behind you. If you have encountered poor trail conditions, let the other riders know.
